Sawyer Newsome was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina where he began training at the age of 15. He is a graduate of Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University where he received his BFA in Dance Performance. At Mason Gross, Sawyer had the opportunity to train with and perform works choreographed by: Shannon Gillen, Martha Graham, Randy James, Doug Elkins, Christian Von Howard and Pam Tanowitz. During college, Sawyer had the opportunity to present his own choreographed works throughout North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, and Utah. Most recently, Sawyer was a part of Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company in Provo, Utah as a company member for their 2020-2021 season. He had the opportunity to choreograph a group work for the company’s spring show with his partner Rachel Calabrese in which they received the Extraordinary Artist Award for their work.
