SPD Training Program

The School of Sonia Plumb Dance Training Program focuses on preparing the young dancer for a professional career in dance. Classes are offered to youth ages 5-17 in order to establish a solid foundation. Students can audition to join the Junior Company for ages 13-17 for a deeper experience. Upon graduating from high school he/she may apply for a paid Apprenticeship position.

School of SPD training program commitment requirements vary by age and level. Students enrolled in the training program take classes on a semester schedule (13 weeks plus a week of semester end performances and evaluations. Tuition may be paid per semester or twice per semester. Scholarships are available for Hartford Youth.

  • Level 1 Foundations: 5-7 classes per week.
    Sample schedule: 2 modern, 1 ballet, 2 creative, 2 elective
  • Level 2 Beginning/Advanced Beginning: 7-10 classes per week.
    Sample schedule: 3 modern, 2 ballet, 2 creative, 3 elective
  • Level 3 Intermediate: 10-16 classes per week:
    Sample schedule: 4 modern/contemporary, 2 ballet, 2 creative, SPDC repertory (2/wk), 6 electives
  • Level 4 Advanced Intermediate: 16-20 classes per week:
    Sample schedule: 4 modern/contemporary, 2 ballet, 2 creative, SPDC repertory (2/wk), 6 electives, 2 partnering, Junior Company 2x/wk.

Expectations
  • Students in the training program are expected to take class consistently and arrive on time. This prepares them for job readiness.
  • Students in beginning levels are required to take 5-7 classes per week.
  • Students in intermediate levels are required to take 8-10 classes per week.
  • Students in advanced levels are required to take 10-15 classes per week.
  • Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
  • Should a student become sick he/she may make up classes in-person or virtually as needed.
  • Should the Training Program need to be shut down for a week due to COVID or other emergencies, the classes will be extended into the end of the semester.
  • Refund policy: sickness or exceptional circumstances only
  • Students are evaluated at the sessions’ end. They are provided with personal feedback from their instructors.
  • Parents will be expected to sign Assumption of Risk forms and daily questionnaires confirming health.
  • Students will be working in their own designated “pods” both at barre and in center.
  • Students are expected to wear masks.
  • Students will need to change at home.
  • Students will be allowed in bathrooms one at a time.
