Romancing the Stones

(2026/2027)

What does it take to build a community out of stone?

Romancing the Stones is a community engagement and dance performance project inspired by past and present rock artists of Central Vermont and the sculptures they created.

Centered around the lives of those who lived and worked in Barre, Vermont, once known as the Granite Center of the World, Romancing the Stones brings to life the universal and timeless themes of love, loss, joy, grief and hope.

We begin the next phase of our journey on October 4 to 10, 2026 at the Vermont Granite Museum in Barre, Vermont.

Community Engagement Opportunities include:

  • “Sculpt a Dance” days for youth, their families and anyone who likes to move (ages 7+);
  • MasterClasses and Workshops for teens, pre-professionals and experienced dancers;
  • Free and Pay What You Can performances on the grounds of the Vermont Granite Museum.

Romancing the Stones began at  The Junction Dance Festival ChoreoLab 2025 Residency  Works-in-progress showings took place at the Barn in Corinth, VT and at the Briggs Opera House in White River Junction, VT.

Romancing the Stones/Phase 2 was performed at the Community of Sound, Burlington, VT as part of TRACES produced by the Vermont Dance Alliance and was funded in part by New England Foundation for the Arts’ New England Dance Fund, with generous support from the Aliad Fund at the Boston Foundation, the Vermont Arts Council and Vermont Community Foundation.
